Hair Color Processing Time Chart
Most permanent color processes 30–45 minutes and most demi-permanents process 20. Matrix SoColor is 30–45 minutes, SoColor Sync 20 and SoColor 10 Minute exactly 10; Redken Shades EQ is 20 minutes but up to 40 on gray; Wella Koleston Perfect is 30–45 and Color Touch 20; high-lift blondes are the long outlier at 50–55. Timing starts when the last section is applied, not when the bowl is mixed, and every figure below is the manufacturer’s own stated time for that line.

What the stated time assumes
A manufacturer’s processing time is measured from the moment the full head is covered, at room temperature, with the product mixed at the ratio on the same data sheet. Three things routinely make the real time differ from the printed one, and none of them is a reason to change the number on the timer:
- Application time counts against you. A twenty-minute application means the first section has processed twenty minutes longer than the last. Start the timer at the last section and accept that the first is at the top of its range.
- Heat accelerates, and is not free time. Where a line permits heat, the data sheet states its own shortened time. Applying heat to a time meant for room temperature is how a level 7 becomes a level 8.
- Resistant gray needs the full time, not more than it. Leaving permanent color on past its stated maximum does not improve coverage once the oxidation has finished; it costs condition. Pre-softening is the answer, not overtime.
Color formulation is a chemical service performed by licensed professionals. Always confirm against the instruction sheet in the box you are holding: manufacturers revise formulations, and regional instruction sheets differ.
