What is the Redken Shades EQ mixing ratio?

1:1 — but with Shades EQ Processing Solution, not a developer. Equal parts gloss and processing solution, processing 20 minutes, or up to 40 minutes on gray.

The ratio is the easy part of this line. The part that goes wrong is the second ingredient, because "1:1" invites you to reach for whatever 1:1 thing is already on the shelf.

1:1 is the easy ratio to state and the one most often mixed by eye for a gloss, which is where a 60 g toner service quietly becomes 60 of gloss and 45 of solution. Why is Processing Solution not a developer?

Shades EQ is an acidic system. Processing Solution is a 2% acidic solution formulated to hold the system's pH and viscosity while the gloss deposits — it is part of the chemistry, not an oxidant chosen for strength.

A standard alkaline cream developer at the same 2% is not a substitute. Swapping it in changes the pH the dyes were designed to deposit at, and with it how the gloss takes, how even it is, and how it fades. You do not get a slightly different result; you get a different product behaving unpredictably.

How long does Shades EQ process?

• 20 minutes for standard glossing and toning work.
• Up to 40 minutes on gray. Gray has no pigment to modify and a more resistant cuticle, so it needs the longer end of the range to take at all.

Gray is the case where a demi shows its limits rather than its timing. Coverage needs dye density, and a gloss is depositing a translucent layer by design. The gray percentage math is here.

What about Color Fusion and other Redken lines?

We have not confirmed mixing ratios for Redken's other lines against current manufacturer documentation, so this page does not state any. Shades EQ is the one Redken line in our cross-brand table with a linked manufacturer source, and it is the only one given a figure here.

That is a deliberate gap rather than an oversight. A remembered ratio presented as a specification is worse than no ratio at all, because it reads exactly as authoritative as a verified one. Which Shades EQ mistakes cost you the service?

• Using a cream developer at 1:1. The most common one. Right ratio, wrong chemistry, unpredictable deposit.
• Expecting opaque gray coverage. Shades EQ is a translucent gloss. On significant gray it tones rather than covers, even at 40 minutes.
• Mixing it into another brand's bowl. Different bases carry different alkalinity, dye loads and viscosities; an acidic demi and an alkaline permanent will not develop at the same rate.
