Wella Mixing Ratios: Koleston, Illumina and Color Touch
Koleston Perfect and Illumina Color both mix 1:1, and Illumina runs on Koleston developers. Color Touch mixes 1:2 with Color Touch Emulsion at 6 or 13 vol — it is a demi-permanent with its own oxidant, not a thinner Koleston. The ratio stays fixed; the developer volume is what you change.
What are the Wella mixing ratios?
Three Wella lines cover most salon work, and they do not share a ratio. Koleston Perfect and Illumina Color both mix 1:1. Color Touch mixes 1:2 — and it is a demi-permanent with its own emulsion, not a thinner Koleston.

What ratio does Koleston Perfect mix at?
1:1 — equal parts colour and developer. A standard 60 g tube takes 60 ml of developer, giving 120 g of mix. Processing runs 30–45 minutes.
The ratio does not change with the developer you choose. This is the part that trips people moving from a line where strength and ratio are coupled: with Koleston you change the developer volume to change the result, and the 1:1 stays fixed.
Which Koleston developer for which result?
- 10 vol. Tone-on-tone. Depositing at the same level, no lift.
- 20 vol. Gray coverage, or one level of lift. This is the default for most coverage work.
- 30–40 vol. Lift. Multiple levels, with the processing time to match.
Does Illumina Color use the same ratio as Koleston?
Yes — Illumina Color also mixes 1:1, and it runs on Koleston or Color Touch developers rather than needing its own. Processing is slightly shorter at 30–35 minutes.
Because the ratio and the developers are shared, the practical difference between the two lines is what the result looks like, not how you mix it. If you can mix Koleston you can mix Illumina.
Why does Wella Color Touch mix 1:2?
Because it is a different product doing a different job. Color Touch is a demi-permanent: lower alkalinity, designed to deposit rather than lift, carrying a smaller dye load that has to spread evenly over a whole head. The extra liquid is what makes that spread possible.
It also takes Color Touch Emulsion, not a Koleston developer — 6 vol (1.9%) or 13 vol (4%). Processing is 20 minutes, not the 30–45 a permanent needs.
1:2 is not diluted 1:1
Mixing Koleston at 1:2 does not give you a demi. It gives you an under-processed permanent with poor gray coverage. The two products are different chemistry, not different strengths of the same thing.
The corollary matters too: a 1:2 mix is deliberately fluid, so Color Touch bleeds if you use it for fine root placement. That is the ratio working as designed, not a fault.
Do Wella high-lift shades change the ratio?
Across the industry, high-lift series generally move to 1:2 where their parent permanent line runs 1:1, because a 1:1 mix runs out of available peroxide before it has removed several levels of natural pigment. Lift stalls with the warm underlying pigment fully exposed, and the result reads brassy rather than merely lighter.

Which Wella ratio mistakes cost you the service?
- Color Touch on a Koleston developer. Wrong oxidant and usually wrong strength. Color Touch Emulsion exists because the system needs it.
- Koleston mixed loose to make it spread. Under- processing and failed gray coverage. Coverage needs dye density, and diluting moves you away from it. The gray percentage math is here.
- Topping up a bowl with developer alone. You have silently changed the ratio mid-service. Mix a second bowl correctly instead.
